Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2011/09/02/2011-09-02_bernies_bound_for_latino_hall_of_fame.html#ixzz1Wpkgsw1BBernie Williams said that when he started his baseball career as a 16-year-old in Puerto Rico, never did he envision a path that would lead to his seat on the dais Thursday, flanked by Hall of Famer Tony Perez, former Giants player and manager Felipe Alou and Minnie Minoso.

"Never in my wildest dreams," said Williams, the former Yankee who was honored at Major League Baseball's midtown offices as one of the 2012 inductees to the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame. "It's just like a script from a movie."

The Latino Hall of Fame, founded in 2009, is located in La Romana, Dominican Republic. Perez, Alou and Minoso are all recent inductees. Williams will be formally inducted in February in the D.R.

Alou managed a teenaged Williams with Caguas of the Puerto Rican winter league and saw the talent early on. "I knew he was going to be somebody," Alou said. "He could really run."

Williams went on to star for the Yankees in center field, and won four World Series in pinstripes. He is now an accomplished guitarist.

"What I'm most proud of is that all of these things I did as a Puerto Rican," Williams said.

Hendrick to sponsor Charlotte schools: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced Wednesday a $250,000 sponsorship deal with Hendrick Automotive Group that will allow the district to offer a full slate of middle school sports for 2011-12. CMS had said it would have to curtail the lineup of middle school sports due to budget cuts, but the Hendrick sponsorship, combined with a gift from an unidentified donor, gives the school system enough to pay for the full slate of 13 sports at all 32 middle schools. The agreement designatesHendrickCars.com as an official sponsor of CMS athletics. It gives the company naming rights when statistics are announced during breaks at high school sports events, recognition as a title partner in announcements at the end of high school events, and the right to display its signs at middle and high school events. "This doesn't mean student-athletes' uniforms will look like NASCAR cars," said Hendrick Automotive Group chairman Rick Hendrick, who also owns arguably NASCAR's most prominent racing team. When we started out as “Jake Peavy’s WOODJOCK” we really weren’t sure who we wanted to be when we grew up. Jake has some very strong passions, but still we hadn’t decided what direction we wanted to take. There are a million GREAT causes and charities out there and every one of them deserves our attention.

With that said, 2.5 years later, WOODJOCK has finally grown up.

From now until our Spring Training event, we are going to educate you, sway you, show you, and try to get you to understand our point of view. WE ARE FOR KIDS!

Woodjock will focus on two things; Team Focus and High School sports. We believe so strongly about these two issues that we are going to dedicate all our efforts and our sponsors efforts to bring you this message and why we need YOU, to help us do something...anything!

High school sports are not just about football or baseball, but about giving our kids choices and lessons in life. High school sports are about community and being a part of something positive and bigger than themselves. It’s about winning, loosing, heritage, memories, and still playing for the love of the game.

Stayed tuned as we bring you coaches and players views, as well as parents and educators. Looking back on high school without sports...well is it really high school?

If you’re a Jake Peavy Fan, it’s obvious that the media has been riding him like a bad habit. In some stories, blaming Jake for the White Sox current record...Seriously, the media is actually going to blame Jake...one of 6 pitchers?

This particular injury is a 18month recovery of which he was back in half the time, but last I checked baseball is a team sport. Did I mention up until the trades, one of 6 pitchers? Jake is an amazing athlete with an incredible work ethic. Maybe he did come back toooo soon, but if he keeps pitching like his last outing, at some point, the team has to back him up.

Part of the problem with sports, is we forgot how to love the sport. As fans and team owners, it ultimately comes down to the ROI. Jake falls into that “paid a ton of money for you, so what have you done for me today” category. I agree to some point, but I also understand there is an intrinsic value to a player of what he does off the field. What part does he play in the community.

THAT is what we are going to focus on...the Jake Peavy off the field, his friend and what they do that is above and beyond pitching on the field.

Today we were going to start our blog with how excited we are about the 2012 Woodjock event. Instead, we decided to pay tribute to one of the best sluggers in MLB history, and the man behind the MLB logo.

Harmon Killebrew was one of those people in life that you were honored you had the opportunity to meet him.

Killebrew hit 573 home runs during his 22-year career, 11th-most in major league history. His eight seasons with 40 or more homers still is tied for second in league history to Babe Ruth

"No individual has ever meant more to the Minnesota Twins organization and millions of fans across Twins territory than Harmon Killebrew," Twins president David St. Peter said. He said Killebrew's legacy "will be the class, dignity and humility he demonstrated each and every day as a Hall of Fame-quality husband, father, friend, teammate and man.

I don't think there is anything more to add. Harmon Killebrew will be missed.
